Force name change consultation

Alert message sent 25/06/2021 13:18:00

Information sent on behalf of Hampshire Constabulary

Message sent on behalf of Police and Crime Commissioner Donna Jones.

On 13 May I became the new Police and Crime Commissioner for Hampshire and the Isle of Wight. It is a great honour to represent the communities of these two counties. Before being elected I campaigned across the two counties for over a year and I received strong feedback from residents on the Isle of Wight that they would like the name of the second county included in the name of the police force that serves the mainland and the Island.

Although separated from the mainland by the Solent, the Isle of Wight is very much part of the Hampshire policing area with much of the same community safety issues as other parts of the county. It is also a community with a strong sense of identity. I wish to promote their interests and respond to the concerns specific to the Island in a way that recognises their unique place in the area.

Today I am launching a consultation to ask residents if they would support the “Isle of Wight” being incorporated into the name of the force. If I gain support from residents, the decision is for the Home Office. There would be no rebranding exercise; the name change would be phased in.
