Burglary Crime Prevention

Alert message sent 30/08/2020 14:11:00

Information sent on behalf of Hampshire Constabulary

Basingstoke Police want to inform residents about a series of burglaries to residential properties as well as outdoor sheds that has been occurring over the past week. These incidents have been occurring in the following areas –
  • South Ham
  • Winklebury
  • Buckskin
  • Rooksdown
  • Viables
Please take some time to read the below information and advice we are issuing.

A burglar will select a target because it offers the easiest opportunity to carry out the crime unnoticed. A building that presents itself as unoccupied or insecure is far more likely to be targeted than one which is properly secured.

Forced entry burglaries are usually organised with an element of planning and targeting, with the offenders having an idea of the property they wish to steal. In tackling a forced entry burglary series, the focus should be on making the target less appealing.

External Advice:
  • Ensure side gates are locked to prevent access to the rear of the property.
  • Ensure rear fencing is in good repair.
  • Do not leave ladders and garden tools in your garden, lock them away in your shed.
  • Improve natural surveillance at the front of your property i.e. trimming high hedges.
  • Consider buying a CCTV system.

Internal Advice:
  • Lock all windows and doors, remembering to double lock UPVC doors (lift handle and turn the key).
  • Keep all keys out of reach and sight from the letterbox (remember a device could be used to hook keys through letterbox).
  • Consider fitting security lighting and a burglar alarm.
  • Get a trusted neighbour to keep an eye on your property when you are away.
  • As with other valuables, do not leave jewellery on display.
  • Remove valuables from view of ground floor windows.
  • If you have a house alarm, set it at night and when you leave your property.
  • Mark your property with postcode and house number and register your property for free with www.immobilise.com.
  • Consider joining or forming a Neighbourhood Watch scheme.

If you see any suspicious activity such as loitering persons and vehicles or persons paying particular area to a certain address please call Hampshire Police on 999.

Kind regards,
Basingstoke NPT for South Ham, Buckskin, Winklebury and Rooksdown.
