COVID-19: Updated recreational shooting guidance

Alert message sent 28/05/2020 14:49:00

Information sent on behalf of Hampshire Constabulary

Hello,

In light of the Government recently easing restrictions on people spending more time outdoors, a number of people have asked whether they can undertake recreational shooting.

There is no longer a limit on the amount of exercise, or ‘open-air recreation’ that we can now do. Travel within England is now also unrestricted meaning that people can drive anywhere, so long as it is for a reasonable purpose such as exercise.

You must decide whether or not to pursue a particular activity, and whether it falls in-line with ‘reasonable excuse’ outlined in the latest guidance and advice from the Government. The current Government advice on www.gov.uk/coronavirus remains the most relevant and up to date advice available, so always check here first.

If you decide to take part in exercise or open-air recreation this must be done by following Government guidance around social distancing i.e. either with members of your household or with ONE other person outside of your household – maintaining a 2m distance where possible. Travelling with another person from outside your household, but in the same car, is however strictly forbidden.

We would ask that you keep in mind the purpose of the regulations and the national effort to protect the NHS and save lives when deciding whether to take part in any recreational shooting activity.

In addition, we would also urge you to make contact with local shooting clubs and relevant governing bodies for any specific guidance relating to recreational shooting. This follows an announcement from the Secretary of State for Sport, Tourism and Heritage, Nigel Huddleston MP, who that shooting ranges and facilities can now reopen, if those responsible for them feel ready to do so and if they can do so safely, in line with related public health guidance.

Please note that if you as a certificate holder are challenged by the police, in terms of participating in any recreational shooting, it is your personal responsibility to demonstrate that it meets the necessary criteria, and is lawful, under the new legislation.
