Coordinators meeting Wednesday Sept 18th 2019

Alert message sent 16/09/2019 11:02:00

Information sent on behalf of Neighbourhood Watch

Dear Coordinators.
At our meeting back in August the question of how to address those schemes which are currently without coordinators and how to expand our membership beyond the streets that currently have schemes that are supported by coordinators was raised by myself.

This meeting was scheduled to discuss in detail this issue.

Other areas in Basingstoke where Neighbourhood Watch is being established have moved away from the traditional approach of street based neighbourhood watch schemes with a coordinator located within the street community. Internet based Technology such as Ourwatch and neighbourhood ALERT have enabled this approach to be established and grow with an area based scheme managed by an Area coordinator supported by a number of deputy coordinators who take responsibility for groups of members.

In Chineham we have 4 schemes currently where there is no coordinator residing within the street. We also have a significant part of Chineham that has no neighbourhood watch presence.

To address these two issues it is suggested that we adopt the area based approach for those schemes missing a resident coordinator and also to allow residents of streets not currently covered to join Neighbourhood Watch without the need to establish new street schemes and find a willing volunteer to become the coordinator for these streets.

To do this the 4 schemes currently without a resident coordinator would form the nucleus of an initial area scheme for Chineham. As residents in these streets without an existing resident coordinator register through OURWATCH to join Neighbourhood Watch in Chineham the area coordinator would be alerted via the OURWATCH system and add the new members to the Chineham Area scheme.

All membership of the Area based scheme in Chineham would be via OURWATCH and the Neighbourhood ALERT system to enable the Area coordinator to communicate to members.

It is not suggested that existing street based schemes with resident coordinators change they way that they operate.

Exactly how we do this has yet to be investigated but a way forward needs to be agreed before we can commence.

My Best Regards
Malcolm Wells
