Theft from Motor Vehicles

Alert message sent 28/01/2019 11:28:00

Information sent on behalf of Hampshire Constabulary

Dear resident

We have had a recent spate of theft from motor vehicles. Offenders have targeted the Abbotswood estate and the surrounding Romsey area in the early hours of Friday morning (25th Jan). It is thought that the thefts have occurred because the vehicles had been left unlocked. If you saw anyone acting suspiciously in the area and or paying attention to vehicles please report it on the 101. Alternatively if you have any CCTV that has captured the offenders, please contact us at

From previous incidents that have happened similarly, it’s been known that the suspects go around trying the door handles of vehicles. Some of the targeted vehicles in this series are older vehicles that don’t have the keyless entry, so it is not thought the offenders have used a device that amplifies the key signal from the house in order to gain entry to the car.
Just to add, the majority of new vehicles wing mirrors fold in when they’re locked, thus making it easier for these criminals to identify which vehicles have been left unlocked.
In car cameras/dash cams are great, however the majority of them only record when the vehicles engine is started up, so it wouldn’t necessarily catch the suspects if they were only entering with the purpose of searching the vehicle for valuables.
We rely a lot on residents having their own CCTV, there are some great systems out there now, and as long as you don’t have the camera pointing directly into a public place or a neighbouring property, you can put them up to cover your property. DIY stores, like B&Q stock a range of CCTV systems that you can go and look at to get an idea of the system you want. Most systems now sync with your smart phone so that viewing the footage is readily available and easy to do.
Please ensure your vehicle is locked and secured when it is left unattended and do not leave any valuables in there.
Many thanks
