Alert message sent 03/12/2018 18:00:00

Information sent on behalf of Hampshire Constabulary

Can you help?

We are appealing for information after an 18-year-old woman was raped on Woodmill Lane in Riverside Park last night (Sunday 2 December).

The woman was walking in Riverside Park between 11pm and 11.50pm when she was approached and raped by a man. She reported the incident soon after.

The woman was walking alone along Wessex Lane and into Woodmill Lane. The incident happened just off of Woodmill Lane in the Riverside Park sports field.

We have been at the scene on Woodmill Lane this morning (Monday 3 December) carrying out enquiries.

The man has been described as white with an average build and stubble. We also be believe he may have muddied his clothes following the attack.

Officers from Southampton North Neighbourhood Policing Team have increased patrols the area. No one has been arrested at this time. The investigation is ongoing and the woman is being supported by specially trained officers.

Chief Inspector Phil Lamb said: “We know this area of the park is used widely by residents and it’s a popular walk-through and we would like to appeal to those who were in the vicinity last night to get in contact with us.

“Were you in this area last night between 10pm and 1am and did you see anyone or anything suspicious?

“It’s important you get in contact with us and tell us what you know.

“As the nights continue to draw darker please think about personal safety. Try to stick to busy, well-lit areas and avoid walking alone late at night. Take a friend or organise a lift. Don’t be tempted to look down at your phone or plug in your headphones, try to stay alert and remain vigilant. Remind others to do the same.

“Officers from the Southampton North Neighbourhood Policing Team will be at Riverside Park this evening. Please do approach them if you have any information that could assist or if you have any concerns.”

“If you have any information that could assist, no matter how small or insignificant it might be, it could really help our investigation. Please speak to an officer at the scene or get in contact with us via 101 quoting Operation Scorch or 44180450724.”

Alternatively, call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
